Here is a quick montage of behind the scenes from the camp.

Friday we finished the 24-hour challenges for each team.  We gave all teams the same Prop, Character, and Line to include:

Prop: Plastic Fork

Character: Clair of Clarence Walker, Interpreter/Translator

Line: “Let me guess…”

Each Team Picked 2 genres randomly, and they selected one genre to make their movie in.  Each team wrote the entire movie themselves, and they were included in the recording and editing process.

Here are those films:

(THIS NEXT FILM HAS A LOT OF ABRUPT SOUND CHANGES, SO DO NOT TURN THE SOUND ALL THE WAY UP)

At the camp, a lot of the kids make side projects that they write, record, and edit with no influence from the camp staff.  In this section, we inclue those fillms.  If there are still films we did not include, please let us know, and we can still put them up here.

This first one was the talk of the camp from day one.

Carson Winkler and Company made this short Horror Film

Asher made this one:

Stella, Nell, and Amelia made this trailer:

On Wednesday morning, we covered Film Genres and what types of stories, camera angles, music, etc. make up different genres of film.  We had everyone make a short movie based on the following prompt:

Genre Script

First Shot: Character standing in a mid-shot looking right at the camera and says:  “I never thought it would happen to me. “

Then several shots of just a few seconds apiece that tell a story using the following voice over.
Voice Over:   When I walked into the room, they were all there doing what they always do.  But something was different this time.  All five of my senses were disturbed.  Sight… Smell… Taste… Hearing, and finally ….touch.
And that is when … IT…happened.

Team Sunny chose a Mystery Genre.

Team Patrick chose the fantasy genre (With some help from the Super Power FX app)

Team Jon-Mark figured that if they could make a musical here, they could make it ANYWHERE.

Team Marshall did not need Michael Jackson to make this Thrilling Video:

On Tuesday Morning at Video camp, we made animations.  Below is a montage of animations the kids made.

On Tuesday afternoon, we made four group pieces.

Team Marshall got their butts off the couch for this story about meeting the legendary “Spud”.

Team Sunny was not going to just roll over.  They went in search of (and found) the magic roll.

Team Jon-Mark Stunk it up with this one:

Team Patrick was Tripping on this next skit!

Monday at Video camp was fun.  We broke up into four teams of seven kids apiece.  Our Team leaders are Jon-Mark Sandquist, Marshall Sandquist, Patrick Fitzgerald, and Sunny Podbelsek.  We covered camera shot types and then we started making videos.  Each group made a scripted video, and the kids were doing a lot of the camera work and the editing.  We primarily used iMovie, Super Power FX, and Action Movie for the iPad, and we also used Pinnacle Studio on a PC.  Some of the kids are working on their own videos in the down time between structured activities.  We love those, and the ones that get finished (that have appropriate content) can be shared here as well.  (The Langston Movie is much anticipated.)

Tomorrow, we will make more videos and also cover different styles of animation.  Here are today’s videos:

Beargrass Media Video Camp June 12-16, 2023

For Registered Campers:

The camp begins Monday, June 12th and runs from 9 AM – 4 PM.  Campers pack a lunch, and we typically eat around noon.  The first day, we ask for campers to arrive about 15 minutes early to wrap up any loose paperwork, etc.  Pickup will be promptly at 4 PM.  Pickup and Dropoff will be on Highland Avenue just East of Cherokee Road.  On the Friday of camp, at 3 PM, we will have a showing of all camp videos with popcorn, and all parents or siblings who want to join in are welcome.

The camp will be at Highland Presbyterian Church 1011 Cherokee Road.  It has a lot of great indoor and outdoor recording spaces including nice meeting rooms, a dining room, a gym, a couple playgrounds and a patio space.  All that space will give us great flexible recording spaces for good and bad weather alike.

Below is a 4-page welcome packet that contains a details page, a map, and 2 pages of release forms to be signed.  If you have a printer, please print and sign pages 3 and 4.  We will have blank forms at the camp dropoff, but having some people signed in advance streamlines the drop-off process quite a bit.

DETAILS:

The students will learn how to write, record, edit, and publish video productions.   The students will use personal devices like phones and tablets tablets as well as camp-supplied iPads, video cameras, microphones, a teleprompter, green screen, etc.  Students who have participated in one of our video camps before will be put in a group appropriate to their experience and ability.

There will be an official welcome packet that comes out the week prior to the camp with some more exact details, but  we wanted to give you a heads-up on what to expect.  This will include what we know now and what could change between now and then related to pandemic precautions.

There is still time to request to be paired up with someone who is already registered or to tell a friend to sign up for the camp to join you.  Sooner is better for us, because as the number of students grows, sometimes we pull in additional help for parts of the camp.

The camp will include some indoor classroom activity, some outdoor instruction and recording, some group projects, and some solo projects.

We will host a video during the week of June 5th for anyone who wants to get last minute questions answered.  We’ll send out the link to that meeting with the welcome packet on June 1st.

Since we spent part of the last 3 years having kids work on video projects independently and/or remotely, we have learned that they gain some valuable experience on some of the solo type work on a phone or tablet, and we incorporate that into the camp.  We would like as many students as possible to bring their portable devices with them to camp.  If your student will NOT be bringing a portable device to camp, please let us know, so we can take an inventory of who will have what.   Students will bring their devices, their lunch, and be dressed for some outdoor time.

All of the most up-to-date camp details will be on this camp page.  We will post videos for the students and link them on the web site, but if any of the kids already have their own YouTube channel, they can post it, and we will link to it.

Looking forward to connecting with these students this summer.  Please feel free to reach out in advance if you have questions.
