2020 June Summer Video Camp

Great job everybody!  We were so impressed with the work everyone did this week at the video camp.  Every single person in the camp improved so much, and we laughed out loud many times at the hilarious and creative choices everyone made. All of the videos made at camp are on line below on this page.  Be sure to watch Noa’s movie “The Hidden Laundry” which did not arrive until after we left the call.

This camp, everyone made their movies on mobile devices, and many of you are absolutely ready to move up to the next level.  It might be different for each kid, but that might mean any number of things:  maybe little gadgets like lenses or microphones for your mobile device, mabe upgrading cameras, maybe moving your editing to a computer instead of a mobile device, etc.  If the parents want to discuss the particulars for their child, feel free to reach out to one of us.

We will be holding a similar camp July 13 – 17, and we are open to expanding the range of what we teach or teaching at multiple levels depending on what the level of the student is.

We would love it if parents and students alike would fill out this survey form so we know how to improve future camps.

Prop:  A mirror

Line of dialog:  Where there’s a will, there’s …

Genre Assignments:

Charlotte – Mystery or Mockumentary

Claire – Teen Drama or Spy Movie

Cole – Action or Comedy

Ethan – Martial Arts or Magic/Fantasy

Josie – Sci-Fi or Slapstick

Noa – Detective or Musical

Thursday Morning – Genre Films

The original definition and instructions:

Film Genres

This morning, we will break into 4 groups of 2 people.  You will send files to each others and collaborate on a movie.  Each team will use the same script and use different shots and music and filters to make the movies feel like the assigned Genre.

This is the Voice Over:

This was one of those really strange days.  And it all started when I saw something that was in the wrong place.  And I wondered “how did it get there?”, but then I wondered who PUT it there?  SO I called my friend ________.

(THE OTHER PERSON SPEAKS ON THE PHONE)  I don’t know how it got there, but I think you  better flip it over.

(THE ORIGINAL CHARACTER FLIPS IT OVER AND REACTS)

Wednesday Afternoon – Collaborative Piece

Everyone contributed a scene to this film.  Cole needs help with his homework.  Josie is going to help him over the phone, but her phone dies, so she resorts to the most antiquated method to get him the answer he needs.

Wednesday Morning – Continuation

Original Instructions and Example

Continuity is combining related shots to show simple action. Taking multiple angles of an action and piecing it together to make it look like one continuous motion.

 Video to include:

2-3 different actions edited in sequence to show one continual movement

Shoot 3-5 angles for each action taken

Try and edit each shot together so it looks like one smooth motion

(Actions like opening and closing doors; pulling out a video game, inserting it into the console, pressing play and starting the game; opening a drawer, looking through clothes, putting them in front of yourself in the mirror…)

There are endless possibilities. Take what could be one continuous shot, break it up and show it from multiple angles as if it was still one continuous action.

Monday Afternoon’s Videos

Make a video where someone ruins your whole day.  Could be a sibling, could be you in disguise.

Part 1 – Set up a few shots which show you getting ready for something you want to do all by yourself. Do not reveal you face. Mix wide shots, cut ins, etc. that do not happen to reveal you altogether.

Part 2 – Show you ready to enjoy your special moment.  Include your face. Might be one shot.

Part 3 – Show someone interrupting you and causing conflict. Small number of shots.

Part 4 – Show the other person getting the better of you.

Part 5 – Show yourself getting back at them or at least attempting to.

Original Instructions

Here are some resources.

iMovie Tutorial (15 minutes)

Camera Shot Types

Before the first day of camp, it would be good for everyone to have the following 5 things done:

  1. Charge mobile devices.  (No need to run around your house or yard dragging a long extention cord behind you.)
  2. Make wure the device and account you are using for attending video meetings will be compatible with Google Meet. (As an example, the JCPS email account for some people was not allowing the student to join a Google Meet in testing, and so the student switched to a parent account or a different Gmail account. We are happy to do a quick video chat test Sunday night if you like.  Call 502.671.9701 to arrange.)
  3. Make sure the device the student will be recording on has email hooked up to the device.  You will be sending us video pieces using email as part of the solution.  (Emailing large files will periodically say “The attachment may be too large to send in email… Do you want to use Mail Drop?…”  we have had really good luck using mail drop.  You will send those files to: beargrassmedia@gmail.com.
  4. Make sure your editing device (Phone or iPad) has iMovie installed on it.
  5. Make sure your editing device has iMotion or iMotion HD installed.  It is free, and we will use it for stop motion animation.
  6. This is not required, but you may choose to watch the 15-minute iMovie tutorial before the camp starts to get familiar with the program.

If you can not get connected by 9:05 Monday morning, please call of text 502.671.9701, and we’ll troubleshoot.
