Neighborhood House

In March and April, 2016, Beargrass Media is running a video club at Neighborhood House in West Louisville’s Portland neighborhood.  This will be the spot where we host the Course Materials and video links.

Weeks 5 and 6 – Co-written Story with the Kids – Evil Tones

On Thursday, April 28th, we engaged the kids with a story telling challenge of coming up with an original story based on some prompts from Allison Cross and Patrick Fitzgerald.  The group really wanted to take on a spooky story.  There were six kids who helped shape the story, a mystery about an old trombone player named “Trombone Jones”.  At the end of the session, Patrick compiled their story into a video script.  On Friday, April 29, some of the same kids and some who were not present Thursday recorded the story, which came to be known as “Evil Tones”.

Week 4 – News Broadcast: Featuring Green Screen and Special Effects

There is an epic scooter race in the neighborhood. How will it turn out?  To find out, you could watch the Neighborhood News.

Special Feature Harold and the Purple Crayon

Stage One is in the middle of a run of performances of Harold and the Purple Crayon.  The character Harold draws with his magic purple crayon, and the images are drawn on a large screen in the back of the Bomhard Theater.  They hand out tablet computers to every kid who attends (yes, literally hundreds of tablets) and ask the kids to interact with the show.  When Harold gets into trouble, they ask all of the kids to draw out pictures on the tablets that help Harold get out of trouble. They hit the “Submit” button, and then lots of kids drawings flash up on the screen in the back of the stage. They are doing school performances through April 15th, and there are two more public performances on Saturday, April 2nd at 11 AM and 2 PM.  Oh, it also features Ben Sollee wearing a sweet lavender trimmed tux…

Another cool thing about this project is that I was able to merge some of my past kids video club experience (Bloom Elementary, Beargrass Media) with a pilot project I started this spring with some kids at Neighborhood House in Portland. Who better to tell people about kids and technology than kids… using technology…  We did a video story promoting the play using two reporters: Nicki, who I have worked with for years, and Aveon, who I just met about 3 weeks ago. They made a great team, and they did a great job introducing the story and interviewing people.  Here is a link:

The Secret of Wealth

In his will, Kia’s great uncle has left her a locked box that says “The Secret of Wealth” on the outside.  She and her friends speculate on what might be inside and come up with various schemes to open the box.  What could it be?

Chocolate Milk Chug

Sometimes it is late at night, and you get really thirsty.  When that happens, it is good to have friends who will come to the rescue.
